Minutes – General Membership Meeting

Wednesday May 5th, 2010

President Lisa Kauffman called the meeting to order at 8:35am.  Board Officers present: Lina Spalding-Ramsay, Bruce Barham, Amanda Kleidermacher, Deanna Christensen, and Mary Porges; 24 attendees; Principal Garcia in attendance.

Agenda item #1 – Welcome – Lisa Kauffman

-       Lisa welcomed all members

-       Acknowledged AMK8 PTA’s accomplishments this year

-       Recognized and thanked all individual board members and committee chairs for their contributions in 2009-2010 PTA year

Agenda item # 2 – Approve April General Membership Meeting Minutes – Mary Porges

-       Distributed minutes to members, Carolyn West motioned to approve minutes, Suzie Sponder seconded, all approved

Agenda item # 3 – Financial Update – Lisa Kauffman

-       Distributed 2009-2010 budget (proposed May 2010) and balance on hand (4/1/2010) sheets

-       We have $40,096 balance on April 13^th, 2010

-       New budget line items for strings (maintenance), more money transferred to teacher grants for middle school books, Georgetown University Portuguese trip, etc.  Also need $500 for AR transportation (3 buses); money taken from surface for courtyard line item

-       Any monies left over will carry over to next year, the proposed budget will allow to end the year

-       Jacqui Roch motioned to approved proposed May 2010 budget, Carolyn West seconded, all approved

Agenda item # 4 – Election of Officers for 2010-2011 AMK8 PTA – Lisa Kauffman

-       President – Suzie Sponder; Ben Cruz – Communications; Charesse Chester – Membership; Carolyn West – Fundraising; Margaret Pantin – Treasurer; Monica Duran – Recording Secretary; Deanna Christensen – Correspondence Secretary

-       Floor is open if someone else is interested in running, no one came forward;  Lina Spalding-Ramsey motioned to approve slate of officers, Patricia Cruz seconded, all approved

-       Carolyn – Fundraising will have a committee, person will own the event, if no chairperson the event will not take place, burn out is bad for group

Agenda item # 5 – Upcoming Events

-       Joan – this Wednesday Friends of Ada Merritt will meet and vote for new board member at 8:30am in Media Center

-       Bruce – Spring Arts Festival – event is tomorrow, art auction to benefit Hope Center across the street, music performance as well, parents are welcome from 9-10:30am

-       Nely – Teacher Appreciation Week – need volunteers

-       Amanda – Book Fair – Elementary will be Monday and Tuesday, Middle School will be Wednesday and Thursday, will also sell uniforms

-       Ana Luisa – Festa Junina – May 27^th, cafeteria performances, need volunteers, middle school involved

-       Nely – AR Field Trip – May 20^th,  need 6 chaperones

Agenda item # 6 – PTA Bylaws Renewal and Vote – Lisa Kauffman

-       Updated Bylaws (valid for next 3 years) distributed, Bruce motioned to approve bylaws, Ron Kauffman seconded, all approved

Agenda item # 7 – Principal’s Update – Carmen Garcia

-       Many events coming to close out the school year; Portuguese high school option at Miami Beach Senior High School, do not have to live in zip code, entrance exam required; Spanish program direct to IB school near your home;  smart board decision will be made vs. other teach options such as smart slate which is portable, did demo in school and being tested until May 17^th, less expensive

The meeting was adjourned at 9:50am.
