Minutes – Board Meeting

Wednesday October 21st, 2009

President Lisa Kauffman called the meeting to order at 8:40am.  Board Officers Amanda Kleidermacher, Tim Orrange, Mary Porges, Lina Spalding-Ramsay, Bruce Barham, and Deanna Christensen were present.  Principal Garcia and Assistant Principal Garcia also present.  Committee Chairs Nely Martinez, Brenda Schwartz, Ben Cruz, Joan Silverstein, and Monica Duran also present.

Agenda item #1 – Welcome and Updates – Lisa Kauffman

• Teacher Grants
• Coach Weaver – request in the amount of $293 for PE equipment, all approved grant
• Padierne and Schweyer will be submitting grants requests
• Ms. Cortez – request grant for IE curriculum, intervention specialist that deal with the emotional aspect that specializes in Brazilian identity, travel for seminar, will train other teachers, seminar in Georgetown University on November 20^th (weekend), seminar uses Brazilian art and music for teaching, $930, all approved
• Grant forms will be posted on teacher resources page
• AMK8 won a healthy eating grant.  A nutrition specialist will be doing presentations to the kids
• Agenda for next general membership meeting will include park officials that will give an update of the upgrades that will be constructed to the park next to our school
• State PTA convention is November 13^th-15^th in Orlando, focus will be legislative issues and advocacy
• General membership meeting in November will be a 5:30 pm meeting, need agenda topic, will probably be tech resources or someone from parent academy program; December meeting will be the park people

Agenda item #2 – Financial Update – Tim Orrange

• We currently have about $34,000 in the bank; $15,000 sold in school books (required reading) and we make 20%
• Tim needs list of member to pay state and national dues

Agenda item # 3– Membership Campaign – Lina Spalding-Ramsey

• 242 members, 3 classes have 100% participation

Agenda item # 4– Principal’s Updates – Principal Carmen Garcia

• Will ask teachers if there are smart board alternatives and rank actual needs
• $10,000 from PTA for security, has contacted captain to see who is available
• H1N1 vaccine flyer is going out; 10/29 is 5^th grades parent meeting; 8^th grade meeting is 11/9 at 8:45am; high school fair 11/4, 18 and 25 – 25 high schools will present to 8^th grade students; second science labs needs supplies, school has ordered $5,000 worth of supplies, held back on ordering cabinet and teacher’s lab table, Joan suggested U of M could donate materials and need to have a wish list of items; 16 teachers from Treasure Island elementary will be visiting AMK8 center to observe program
• MYP visit 10/26 and 27, $1,600 budget for visit

Agenda item # 5– Fundraising – Amanda Kleidermacher

• Deanna Anderson will be Gala chair
• Go Pass underway – going out next week

Agenda item # 6– Other

• Bruce – Holiday show will be in school, Dr. Dash and Ms. Gonzalez organizing, grades 2-4 will be December 9^th and grades 5-7 will be December 11th
