Minutes – Board Meeting
Friday August 28, 2009

Media Center

President Lisa Kauffman called the meeting to order at 8:35am.  Board Officers Tim Orrange, Amanda Kleidermacher, Bruce Barham, Mary Porges, Lina Spalding-Ramsay, Deanna Christensen were present.  Principal Garcia and Assistant Principal Garcia also present. 

Agenda item #1 – Welcome and Updates – Lisa Kauffman
-    Two new board members Lina Spalding-Ramsey - Membership, and Deanna Christensen – Corresponding Secretary
-    PTA logo needs to be included on all correspondence and materials
-    Distributed several handouts – PTA Bylaws, PTA Purpose, Previous Standing Committees / Chairs, survey results
-    PTA Purpose – Emphasis is on bullet point # 4, to bring into closer relation the home and the school, that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth.  Lisa shared her personal emphasis with the increase of participation across diverse groups, increase communication and e-mail Bruce updates for website
-    Deanna raised the question of school clubs, administration gets funding for clubs, Can a parent lead a club?  Principal Garcia will research the issues and how to execute.
-    Executive Committee are the elected officers, Executive Board also includes Committee Chairs and Principal
-    Judy Schechter is willing to lead a H1N1 flu seminar, we need to consider hand sanitizer stations (such as the ones on cruise ships) in key places around the school, need to put estimate together for 4 stations to present for approval and budgeting

Agenda item # 2 – Membership Campaign – Lina Spalding-Ramsey
-    “All on Board with the PTA” theme, create large visual of a cruise ship with flip flops attached to the bottom representing classes that have reached 100% membership levels, buttons, pop corn or popsicle party

Agenda item # 3 – Fundraising Events – Amanda Kleidermacher
-    Uniforms will be sold the first Tuesday of every month from 8–9 am in the main office area
-    Required reading for the year is being worked on and the list being prepared for parents to buy books via the PTA, should be finalized this Monday
-    Catalog sales campaign will begin September 14th, products will have peanut offerings but items will be delivered directly to parents home
-    Fundraising events for the remainder of the year distributed to board

Agenda item # 4 – Principal’s Updates – Principal Carmen Garcia
-    Flyers cannot be posted on the classroom doors, 2 main bulletin boards
-    Security a continuing concern – parents not following rules specially during dismissal time, crossing guards at NE intersection of school from 7-9am and 1-3pm, money is needed for additional security
-    Ada Merritt is academically blossoming – 8th Grade is new, science and writing test
-    Any activity needs final approval from administration
-    Middle School science needs can be handled via teacher grants process
-    Courtyard renovation at a standstill until school can determine the level of County support

Agenda item # 5 – Treasurer’s Report – Tim Orrange
-    Please put money for deposit in same direction, use forms
-    Report as of June 30th – net income for the year $19,948.44, monies still need to be spent for renovation of courtyard

Agenda item # 6 – Other
-    Bruce asked if advertising is allowed on school grounds (fence) to raise money, Principal Garcia will clarify
-    Next General Membership Meeting is Wednesday September 9th at 5:30 pm, we will not charge for dinner and dinner will be ordered in
