General Membership Meeting Minutes
May 07, 2008

President, Margueritte Ramos, called the meeting to order at 5:46pm. All Board Members were present. Principal Carmen Garcia and Assistant Principal Barbara Garcia were present. 
 
Welcome/Approval of Minutes – Margueritte Ramos
            -Margueritte welcomed and opened the meeting
            -A single copy of previous General Board Meeting minutes was circulated.
                                                        
Agenda item #1 Treasurer’s Report – Doug Labrozzi
            - 4 years on Board. He is leaving, won’t be on the Board, but will be a member.
 
Old Business
Agenda item # 2 – Ball and Silent Auction Report – Floriana Martinez
                        - ~21K profit / cashed in 32K – spent 10K
- Floriana prepared a package guide with all the info and step-by-step outline for        gala prep.
Agenda item # 3 - Catalog Sales – Guest Speaker – Nelson Varona
                        - AM K-8 made more money than last year
                        - Next year the merchandise will arrive directly to homes.
                        - Helping Hands Program with Great America
Agenda item # 4 - Funds for Musical Instruments and After-school Strings Program
                        - $6000 for musical instruments (from Gala profit)
                        - A portion of it will go to aftercare music enhancement
                        - Bruce Barham: Possibility to hire another music teacher to run strings program?
                        - Principal Garcia: Don’t know allocation for next year yet.  
                        - Children’s Trust? We don’t meet the criteria for free and reduced lunch.
Agenda item # 5 - Earth Day Report – Suzie Sponder
                        - Thanks to Leda Barham and Amanda Kleidemacher
                        - Shred It Program up and running in school
                        - Electronic recycling program funded it.
                        - Miss Padierne’s class won the electronic recycling race
- Collection of gently used, re-usable gift items for recycling to be sold at the garage sale during Festa Junina.
           
New Business
Agenda item # 6 – Nominating Committee Report / Election of Officers – Amelia Goudy
            - New Slate was approved – Lisa Kauffman new PTA President
- Carmen Partridge: motion to add Jackie Roach as co-chair of Garden Committee
- Motion approved
 
Agenda Item #7 – Festa Junina – Nely Martinez
            - The whole event will be outside
            - There will be vendors this time
            - Same DJ as the Gala (to become the official AM K-8 DJ)
            - Book is Portuguese will be available during Festa
 
Agenda Item #8 – Vote on Expenditure of Funds for Security Machine – Nely Martinez
- $7,500.00 to set up
- No apparent consensus
- Lisa Kauffman: motion to postpone security until more info is researched
- Motion approved
 
Agenda Item #9 – Summer Trip to Guatemala for Middle School Students – Carmen Partridge
            - $1,500 = two scholarships funded by PTA
            - Full scholarship = $1,100 / Partial Scholarship = $400
 
Agenda Item #10 – Presentation of Travel Website to benefit AM PTA – Deanna Christensen
            - Vendor Commission will be paid to AM K-8 PTA
            - $450 starting cost / $50 a month
            - 60% sales commission to PTA
            - Suzie Sponder presents motion to vote – Nely Martinez seconds
            - Motion approved
 
Agenda Item #11 – President’s Report - Margueritte Ramos
            - Teresa Pinto – Go Green Initiative
            - Philanthropy  Events – Dress Up days to benefit Peruvian Disaster
            - Pennies for Peace
            - High School Committee continues working
            - Special T-shirts to members and committee volunteers
            -Thank you
 
 
 
Agenda Item #12 – Principal’s Report - Carmen Garcia
            - Thank you for everything you’ve done for the children
            - Contests:
- Math Bowl – AM K-8 First Place in Miami-Dade County on 5/03/08
- Superintendent Music Festival – 5th and 6th grade (6 children) performed on 5/12/08
- Art on display during Youth Fair and contest
            - Field Day
            - Visiting Authors
            - No class size yet
            - 7th grade curriculum being written
