General Membership Meeting Minutes

Music Room
President, Margueritte Ramos, called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. Board Members present included April Bolet, Monica Duran, Suzie Sponder, Toni Anderson, Assistant Principal Barbara Garcia.
Agenda item #1 – SIPA Presentation
Presentation of program by a SIPA board member
Benefits include:
- Cultural events and sponsorships
- Purchase of books
Agenda item #2 – Assistant Principal Garcia
- Park security monitor equipped with walkie-talkie when there is a class in session
between 8:30am and 3:00pm
- Officer Alvarado possibly assigned to the school to be here a couple of days a week & for IFF
- Report Cards go home on Nov 9th
- Student Award Assembly by invitation
- Last month’s visiting author, Georgina Lázaro León
- Author David Antonor, visiting today
- Ana Maria Machado, Brazilian author
- Kindergarten Showcase, after the end of PYP unit. Parents welcome to attend.

Materials and resources
Adriana Savino, President of Centro Cultural will try to allocate resources to bring it up to par with IS program
- Scientists Committee
Generate a list of topics and availability to be presented to Principal Garcia
- New Applicants’ Tour – Nov 27th
- Interim Assessment - to monitor progress to target specific levels
- Visitors from the District - a Committee from Grand Cayman has been on school grounds observing the program because they want to implement the program in their district
- Curriculum
4th grade writing is 79%, 4 points higher, want to bring it up to 90%
5th grade – promotional ceremony and field trip, more info forthcoming
- Safety Patrol – Officer Alvarez is recruiting 5th and 6th graders for program
- Attendance
District Report: 95.7
First 9 weeks – 97%
- Middle School MYP Meeting – Lisa Kaufman – Nov 15th, 9:00am
Agenda item #3 – Park Security – Ana Gonzalez
- Is looking to hire exclusive use of the park, more security, a shade, and to refurbish the bathrooms.
- Some parents are going the City to bring up the issue
- It was discovered at a Miami-Dade City Police and Department of Parks & Recreation meeting that there is no exclusive use of the park
Agenda Item #4 – Motion to form a committee to bring up P.E. issues to the city
- Ana Gonzalez presented the motion.
- Jacquie Roch seconds the motion.
Agenda Item #5 – Art Teacher
- Only for Fridays = 0.5 of the 1.5 approval
- The position is not open; however, Assistant Principal Garcia will check with Principal Garcia to make sure that’s accurate info.
Agenda Item #6 – Motion to Approve Last General Board Meeting’s Minutes
- April presented the motion
- Lisa seconds it
Agenda Item #7 – Ada Merrit Go Green – Presenter: Teresa
- 12-step program
- Teach children to reduce and recycle
- Secure destroying of documents by use of an appropriate company
- Recycle old gadgets
- Recycle the water of the fountain
- Start a compost
- Rain barrel to collect rain water
- Cafeteria recyclable trays
- Gray water for toilets
- Solar power for fountain operation
- Comparative use of electricity
- Occupancy sensors for room lights
- Some of these measures would need to be approved; others would need infrastructure
Agenda Item #8 – After School Clubs
- Science, chess, etc
Agenda Item #9 – Catalog Sales – Presenter: April
- Orders arrive next Friday
- Need to reconcile sales with internet sales to see which classroom sold the most
Agenda Item #10 – Teachers’ Grants
- $600 for 5th grade musical (Crawford/Wong)
- Computer overhead
- Motion to approve $176 Overhead projection screen

- Not very popular, the consensus seems to be that a program needs to be held at AMK-8 center
Agenda Item #12 – “Say No to Drugs” Campaign
- Teachers did it in classrooms
