April's "Butterfly"

April 7, 2010

We’re back from Spring Break!
Don’t Miss the April PTA Meeting
All parents should mark their calendars for this month’s PTA General Membership Meeting on Wednesday, April 14th at 8:30 a.m.

“That 70’s Gala”
Jungle Island was the place to be on the evening of Friday, March 19th, where all in attendance were having the time of their lives, “living it up” in fine 70’s style. Ada Merritt parents and friends were all decked out and “thrown back” in their beautiful halter neck and granny dresses, maxis and minis, cat suits, tuxedo shirts, bell bottom pants—did I forget to mention platform shoes? And to think much of the 70’s attire is back; just look at today’s fashions!
Congratulations to this year's Gala Honorees:
Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Diane Davis
Rookie Teacher of the Year, Dr. Louis Dash
Mrs. Adriana Riquet Sabino, President, Brazil-USA Cultural Center of Florida
Dr. Nelson L. Adams, M.D., Chairman, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Jackson North Medical Center
Needless to say, “That 70’s Gala” was a grand success thanks to our Ada Merritt PTA, our students, teachers, parents and SPONSORS!
The combined fun, excitement and overall success of the Gala will enable the Ada Merritt PTA to provide much needed books/media to the Portuguese and Spanish programs, improve security at the school, and fund Teacher Grant requests. A huge THANK YOU to all!
Exercise, Fun and a Very Worthy Cause
Friday April 16, 2010 will mark the first annual Ada Merritt K-8 Center GET SMART Walk. 100% of the money raised will be dedicated to outfitting our school with Smart Boards! All students, by grade, will take part in the GET SMART Walk. There will be a DJ, refreshments and lots of exciting activities.

How Does It Work?
Prior to the day of the walk, students should ask family and friends to lend support and sponsor them in the walk (No door-to-door solicitations please!). A pledge sheet and collection envelope will be sent home in students’ backpacks. Parents and students should fill out the pledge sheet on the collection envelope, and then return the signed form and envelope with all collected funds to the child’s teacher no later than Wednesday April 14. We accept cash or checks made payable to Ada Merritt PTA.

   Remember This…
The 5th Grade Primary Years Projects (PYP) promise to be tremendously enriching again this year, and one in particular is very special. “Team Remember This” has chosen Alzheimer's as their 5th Grade PYP project because so many families have been touched by this disease. “Team Remember This” aims to recognize and support the families and friends of students at Ada Merritt K-8, who are dealing with this debilitating disease.

For the month of April, there will be a bulletin board with photos that reflect the faces of Alzheimer's. If you would like your loved one to be remembered, please send in a photo and do the following:
1. Email a photo of your loved one with responses to the following, to mandykleid@yahoo.com.
* Student’s name and grade.
* Who is it that has Alzheimer's (grandpa, grandma, etc.)?
*In a few words, state how you feel about this disease.
2. Or, once completed drop the above information in the PTA mailbox (Don’t forget the photo).
If you would like to get even more involved, please email mandykleid@yahoo.com. A very successful Memory Walk was held on the morning of March 20th, to help bring awareness to this disease.
"Guns Gone Wild", another 5th Grade PYP group has invited Miami Police Lt. Joseph Schillaci for a special presentation for the 5th through eighth graders about gun violence and gun violence prevention. This presentation will be held in the Ada Merritt cafeteria on Thursday, April 15th at 8:45am. Parents are welcome to attend. Please check Lt. Schillaci's website: http://joeschillaci.com/home.asp

It’s Off to Orlando for our Fifth Graders!
Congratulations to our 5th Grade, Class of 2010, on reaching an important milestone in their education. As is the tradition at Ada Merritt, the Fifth Grade will enjoy an exciting class trip, which will take them this year to the Islands of Adventure for a full day of fun and enjoyment! Get ready Orlando! Our deserving students will be taking your city by storm on Saturday, April 10th. Special thanks to our Fifth Grade teachers!
Be there on April 17th… it’s all about our young scientists at Miami Dade College’s North Campus!
North Campus will be the host venue for the 22nd Annual Miami Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Olympiad, where over 800 school students county-wide will compete in science related hands-on activities and contests. All students, K-12, are invited to cheer-on our very own budding scientists who will be representing Ada Merritt: Nikola Stojanovic and Patrick Barham. It will be an engaging day for all in attendance, given the bridge-building, mouse-car, egg-drop, rocket-launch and many more demonstrations and competitions that will be taking place. Ample parking is available on the beautiful 245 acre North Campus. Take a guided tour of the Campus’ newly inaugurated Science Complex with 21 research-standard science labs, weather station and rooftop observatory, a 3.4 acre palm arboretum, orchid and bromeliad greenhouses, and a Koi-stocked lake (yes, you can even feed the fish). The event, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., is free and open to the public.
